Aya Habe
  • 360 ml milk (1.5 cup)
  • 3 eggs
  • 480 ml flour (2 cups)
  • 5 ml salt (1/2 tsp)
  • 3/4 stick butter
  • Mix, flour, eggs, salt, and milk in a bowl.
  • Melt butter in a frying pan on high.
  • Pour batter in pan.
  • With two knives, fold and cut the batter as it congeals.
  • Keep cutting until pieces are the desired size.
  • When the batter is fully congealed, keep turning the mix until it is browned as desired.

Beef and Broccoli Salad (Julia)
  • 1 small flank steak
  • 1 bunch of broccoli
  • Grill and slice steak
  • Cut broccoli into bite-sized pieces
  • Blanch broccoli 30 seconds

Ginger Dressing

  • 1/3 cup light soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp of sesame oil
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp sugar or molasses
  • White pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp of sesame seeds
Toss steak with dressing overnight, cool broccoli and mix with steak and crisp Chinese noodles for texture.

Black Bean Salsa (Julia)
  • 2 15.5 oz. cans of Black Beans
  • 3 tbsp chopped Jalapeno
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp Adobo with pepper
  • 1 10 oz package of frozen corn thawed
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • ½ cup diced red bell pepper
  • 1 large tomato
  • 3 tbsp fresh minced cilantro
  • 3 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • Rinse black beans.
  • Seed and dice tomato.
  • Ccombine all and serve with tortilla chips

Chicken Cheddar Salad
  • 2 cups chopped cooked chicken/turkey
  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
  • ½ cup Chopped pitted ripe (black) olives
  • ½ cup Shredded cheddar
  • ¼ cup Chopped celery
  • ¼ cup Chopped onion
Combine all; mix lightly.

Chili Con Carne (Julia)
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 28 oz can whole tomatoes with juice (or 2 15 oz cans)
  • 1 large green pepper (I use celery)
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp crumbled dried oregano
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 15 oz cans of kidney beans with liquid
  • Can of tomato paste (Optional)
  • Cook meat in microwave/frying pan
  • Drain fat
  • Add remaining ingredients and simmer
  • Best eaten a day later to blend flavors

Christmas Wreath Cookies
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 TSP grated orange rind
  • 1/4 TSP salt
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 TSP nutmeg
Cream butter, add sugar, orange rind, & egg; beat until light. Add flour and salt. Chill. Roll to 1/8 inch thick; cut, put on greased sheets.
  • 1 egg white
  • green sugar
  • red cinnamon candies
Beat egg white till foamy, add 2 TBS of sugar graduallybeat till stiff, brush cookies. Decorate. Bake in hot oven, 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

Glüwine (Rose)
  • 4 liters quality red wine
  • 250ml (1 cup) vodka
  • Juice from 3 lemons
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 6 lemon slices
  • Put all ingredients in a big pot, except the sugar and lemon slices
  • Simmer covered for 10 minutes
  • Add 2 teaspoons of sugar per person to taste
  • Simmer 10 more minutes
  • Put lemon slices in heat-roof glasses
  • Pour mixture into each glass.

Halushki
  • 1 egg
  • 240 ml flour (1 cup)
  • 10 ml salt (1 tsp)
  • 60 ml water (1/4 cup)
  • 1 stick butter
  • cooked sauerkraut
  • onion
  • Boil water in a large pan (as making pasta).
  • Saute onion in butter in a frying pan
  • Mix water, egg, flour, and salt for the batter. Use enough water to make a sticky consistency.
  • Plop batter onto cutting board.
  • With a knife, shave batter into boiling water.
  • Boil for about 5 minutes.
  • Drain over sauerkraut. Mix with sauted onion and butter.

Holiday Butter Cookies (Mom used to ice)
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 TSP vanilla
  • 1 TBSP milk
  • 3 TSP baking powder
  • 3 cups of flour
Chill the dough at least 2 hours; Overnight is best - makes it is easier to roll. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 400 degrees, 4-8 minutes.

Holiday Cut Out Cookies (Mom used to put sprinkles on)
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 TBSP milk
  • 1/2 TSP baking powder
  • 2-1/2 cups flour
  • 1 TSP nutmeg
  • 1/4 TSP salt
The dough needs to be chilled at least 2 hours, preferably overnight. It is easier to roll then. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 400 degrees. Time depends on how thick your roll them out (4-8 minutes).

Mom's Peach Cake (Mary)
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 4 tbls shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • peaches or plums
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • Sift the dry ingredients(4 tbsp sugar) and mix in shortening.
  • Beat egg and mix with milk; add to dry ingredients to make a soft dough.
  • Spread dough in a large greased tin.
  • Slice fruit and spread evenly over dough.
  • Sprinkle with: 1/2 cup sugar/cinnamon mix.
  • Bake in a 375 degree oven until done.

Polichinki
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup milk (possibly more to make very thin batter)
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1/16 tsp salt

(Contributed by friend Sally Heartmade) Not sure if this is the same recipe that Mom used, but here it is:

  • Beat egg in small bowl until frothy.
  • Add remaining ingredients and beat until smooth. The texture should be very very thin.
  • Using a heated nonstick pan, spoon about 2-3-tbsp of the batter in the pan.
  • Tip the pan in a circular motion to spread thinly and evenly.
  • Brown lightly on one side only.
  • When its done, you'll have air bubbles coming poking through the top.
  • Remove from pan, and let cool. Pour a line of the filling of your choice down the middle and roll it up.

Pupen Spaetzl
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 - 1 tsp salt
  • about 1/2 cup water
Mix ingredients to sticky consistency. Plop onto cutting board. With knife, scrape into boiling water. Cook until floating.

Salmon Sauce with Pasta (Julia)
  • 2 shallots or onion
  • Olive oil
  • 2-3 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1/4 lb. butter
  • 1/2 pint heavy cream
  • 5 slices smoked salmon
  • 1 lb pasta
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese
  • Sauté onions in olive oil until opaque.
  • Add tomato sauce and cook 3 minutes.
  • Add butter and melt.
  • Add cream and simmer 2-3 minutes, until heated but not boiling.
  • Add diced salmon and cook 3-4 minute.
  • Cook pasta and toss with sauce
  • Add parmesan cheese to taste and serve

Sour Milk Pound Cake (Julia)
  • 1 ½ cups (3 sticks) butter, room temperature
  • 2 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 ½ cups flour
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk/sour milk
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  • With electric mixer, cream butter until fluffy. Gradually add sugar, creaming all the while. Continue until mixture is uniform (5 minutes).
  • Beat in eggs one at a time.
  • Mix flour, soda and salt and add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Stir in vanilla.
  • Pour into well-greased and floured pan (0ne 10-inch tube, or 2-3x8x4, or 5x3x6).
  • Bake 1 hour and 20 minute for tube pan, less for smaller pans.
  • Cool 15 minutes. Loosen cake from pan with spatuila. Turn onto wire rack until cool to room temperature.
